RE: Arctic Fox vs. Eagle Cap

Both are nice campers but owning an AF I will say that there customer service is second to none in my experience. EC may be just as good, others can chime in on that, but post customer care is important in making your decision. I really like the gel coat finish on the EC. Sticky

RE: manufacturers...who's going strong???

Arctic Fox is closing their VA plant. They haven't been producing campers there for a while now, just doing warranty work, but now not even that anymore. My rig was just down there for some repairs and they were in the process of selling all the equipment and office supplies and told me that I was probably going to be the last repair job. I've had some problems over the years with my AF but they ALWAYS stood behind the product and repaired it without hesitation. They are a good company with good people and I hope their Oregon location (main plant) hangs in there and weathers the storm. I just hope these fuel prices stabilize soon so people can get on with budgeting their lives, this constant fluctuation is keeping everybody on edge and afraid to make a move. Credit restrictions are also putting a strangle hold on the country which doesn't help the RV industry either. Sticky

RE: Remove set in bedliner or not??

Bamaguy, Don't know what the brand is but it certainly seems pretty heavy duty and it's about 3/8"-1/2" thick. I bought from the dealer where I got my camper. I'll see if there is a name stamped on it when I take the camper off. Sticky

RE: Remove set in bedliner or not??

I had a drop in liner in my truck before I bought the camper so I just threw a rubber mat over it when I got the camper and away I went. I don't go off roading but I do beach camp occasionally and I have had no problems or movement. I do have wingnuts on my license plate though so if it does fall out I can remove the plate quickly and get out of there.;) Sticky

RE: Dodge 1 ton DRW

I get about 12-14 mpg. but I got a truck camper that weighs about 4500lbs. and sits in the truck bed so no towing involved, just added weight but it does catch a lot of wind sitting so high. I usually run around 65 mph to keep my rpms 2k or lower. Empty on the highway I'll get about 17-19mpg if I drive conservatively. Sticky

RE: dually valve stems?

If the wheels are balanced like they should be then it doesn't matter where the valve stems are. If you then add the braided steel type extensions you want to have them 180 deg. opposing each other because you added them after the wheel was machine balanced thus throwing it out of balance, just like adding another weight. At least by having the extensions opposing you kind of cancel out the effect. With that said, I've heard of some leaking issues with extenders. Make sure you get the type that only open the rim valve when the extension valve is pressed. There is a cheaper type that always keeps the rim valve open and keeps pressure in the extension allowing for a better chance of leaking. The type I went with are rim mounted extensions for your specific truck and allow for balancing with the valve installed. A bit pricey but they work great and you hardly notice them - Tire Valve Extenders Sticky

RE: diesel truck resale prices drop like a rock

Who cares? No different than the housing market in a down turn now, but it will come back in time. Glad you got out of your diesel in time if it was getting too costly. Fuel prices are going to do what they do and the economy will adjust accordingly. The rapid changes is what has everybody spooked, it'll level out in time. The good thing is this will force automakers to make more efficient vehicles, bad thing is fuel will probably be $7 gal. to offset any gains. If it gets too high for me then I'll fold, but for now i'll ante up and hope the oil companies are bluffing. Can't stop living, only got one shot at this and I've come this far already !!! Sticky

RE: Does anyone have

I used the SureSet digital in cab controller on mine. It maintains pressure automatically within 7lbs. of your setting and you only need to run wires into your cab, no air lines. Seems they have replaced this with an even newer wireless system that looks pretty slick - Wireless Controller Sticky At ~$350 a pop for either the SureSet or the newer WirelessAIR units, I think I am happy to stay with some air lines coming into the cab. ;) I got my SureSet for $300 and with a 40K+ truck and 30K camper I figured what's another few bucks. I would guess the gauge type are probably around $150 so it wasn't too big of a leap in price. Besides, the OP didn't ask about cheaper pricing. You think your happy with your system where I know I am happy with mine.;) Besides Don, looking at your sig it looks like you have dumped some heavy coin into your toys too so it seems your no stranger to the need vs. want struggle, just spent our money on different things.

RE: Toy Hauler to a Truck Camper - Thoughts...***Updated***

We had a 32' TT a few years back and traded for a TC. Although I really liked the room and comfort of the TT, I found we weren't really using it all that much anymore because of always having to tow it. I love the freedom of not having to tow anything, although I do some times depending on what where doing. We use the TC all the time now because it's so easy and flexible. I found that the TT was much more destination oriented camping whereas the TC is more along the lines of travelling, exploring and figure it out as you go type use. We take the TC on short day trips or overnighters because it's easy, never did this with the TT. For just the two of us it's perfect but I could see it getting cramped with more people. We've had 4 adults for weekends in ours but you better get along really well. Another thing I like is the true 4 season use and the instant 4wd camper for snow or beach use. TT and 5th wheels are like a second house, TCs are like a cozy little cabin, your choice. As long as your rving, all is good. Sticky

RE: Dodge wiring diagram

Go here - Dodge Body Builder or you can go to - Geno's Garage and order the full service manual for you truck on cd for about $100 bucks. The service manual is priceless if you do some of your own wrenching, and a small investment for an expensive truck. Sticky

RE: Truck bed sheet metal tear

Thanks all for the replies. Sounds like the plywood may be a good solution, just wonder how well it will hold up to warping when wet even if it is treated. I was thinking maybe a thick piece dense foam insulation to act as a cushion between the bed and camper. I figured that the foam will just compress at the pressure points and take the shape as needed. Am I wrong thinking this??? As I said before, the cracks are not that bad yet (similar to the pics in the other thread) but I want to avoid any worsening. Should I do something to repair these cracks first or just rust proof them? Sticky

Truck bed sheet metal tear

A while back someone posted about the sheetmetal in their truck bed developing some small tears towards the rear. I don't remember the brand truck they had but my Dodge seems to be having the same issue. They are not very big but they are an obvious stress point and don't want them to grow! My best guess is that it happens either while I'm traveling and the rocking motion causes it or when I load and the rear makes touchdown before the front sometimes. I have a bed liner and rubber mat but I guess this is not enough to disperse the load. Any suggestions or comments on this would be appreciated to correct this problem. Thanks, Sticky

RE: what MPG and at what speed?

I get around 18 mpg running empty in my 05 keeping it around 65mph. With the camper on at the same speed I get about 13-14 mpg mixed driving. Acceleration and top speed (wind resistance) seem to be the two most controlling factors. Even if I add my 2500 lb. cargo trailer there doesn't seem to be a change in mileage. Go faster than 65mph and I see a big change. My truck runs about 1900-2100 rpm at 65 which is right in it's peak power band but I have a 4.10 rear. You may be able to run slightly faster and maintain the same rpms with the 3.73 but your wind resistance will increase so I don't know if it matters. As others have said, your not going to know for sure until you load up and go. Some campers seem to have a more aerodynamic nose than others so this may help some. I have an Arctic Fox that has a pretty flat front nose but the trade off is more room inside. Sticky
